Ana Lisa Hedstrom, an internationally recognized master shibori artist, travels from California to demonstrate her inventive approach to shibori. Ana Lisa possesses the creativity and imagination of an artist-engineer, taking traditional shibori techniques to another level by developing replicable approaches and “twists” that are her very own.

In this workshop Ana Lisa leads us through folding and stitching of cloth that comes from the practice and understanding of traditional Japanese Katano Shibori. Come work alongside Ana Lisa to experience how she thinks through and develops her surface designs using shibori and various substrates. Stitching will be done by hand and sewing machine.

You’ll have an opportunity to share your work for critique and discussion.

OUR INSTRUCTOR

Ana Lisa Hedstorm is known for her signature textiles based on contemporary adaptations of Shibori. Her approach creates a conversation between East and West and traditional and contemporary. Though Ana Lisa’s work is deeply informed by traditional techniques, she often experiments with material, dye color, and stitching patterns. Her textiles are included in the collections of major museums, including the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Oakland Museum, and the De Young Museum. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally. She has taught and lectured at numerous international Shibori conferences and schools. Her awards include two NEA grants, and she is a fellow of the American Craft Council.
