Following breakfast, we depart by private coach to visit the remarkable Notre-Dame du Haut, a masterpiece of mid-20th-century architecture designed by Le Corbusier. We explore the chapel and its surrounding complex, taking in the innovative forms, striking use of light, and serene atmosphere that have made this site an architectural icon. Visitors recognize the original inspiration in the work of later architectural luminaries such as Tadao Ando and Luis Barragán, evident in the chapel’s sculptural walls, curved roof, and carefully framed natural light. Together, these elements create a profound sense of spiritual and visual harmony, while the commanding hilltop location offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Vosges landscape. Considered one of the most important modern religious buildings, it continues to inspire architects, artists, and visitors worldwide.
We visit the newly built space at the chapel’s foothills, designed by Renzo Piano, where we meet the nuns who care for and maintain the chapel. Here, we also enjoy a delightful lunch in a peaceful setting that complements the site’s spiritual and architectural beauty.
After lunch, we continue by coach to the Musée d’Impression sur Étoffes (Museum of Printed Textiles) in Mulhouse to explore its exceptional collection of historic and contemporary printed textiles. The museum showcases centuries of fabric design, including intricately patterned silks, cottons, and printed materials that reflect both industrial innovation and artisanal mastery. Its collection includes the historical Hermes silk scarves archive. With its interactive displays and curated exhibitions, the museum offers a unique window into the evolution of textile arts and their enduring influence on fashion, design, and decoration.
Also on this day’s itinerary is The Vitra Design Museum among the world’s leading museums of design. It is dedicated to the research and presentation of design, past and present, and examines design’s relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. Its exhibitions address themes such as future technologies, sustainability, or questions of mobility and social awareness.
