12ISS Workshop with Kaei Hayakawa: Arashi Shibori with a Master – Basel

Join this rare opportunity to work alongside Master Arashi Shibori artist, Kaei Hayakawa, the last in a lineage of practicing Arashi shibori artists in Japan. Hayakawa-san, who rarely travels abroad from Japan, has for this symposium workshop developed a portable rotating Arashi pole for participants to experience and learn traditional Arashi shibori through a hands-on approach.

When in the 1970’s Hayakawa-san observed the dying art of Japanese Arashi shibori, he learned and replicated as many Arashi shibori patterns as possible with preservation in mind. He had a machinist design and build a motorized stainless steel Arashi pole.

This workshop introduces Hayakawa-san’s inventive approach to Arashi shibori and his tour de force contemporary creations. Historically, Arashi shibori patterned mostly men’s yukata, a summer Japanese cotton attire. Now?–It’s up to you!

OUR INSTRUCTOR

 

Kaei Hayakawa is a Master Arashi shibori artist who lives and works in the traditional shibori production center of Arimatsu-Narumi, Japan. In 2023, he began teaching his methods to international students in WSNF’s Travel for Workshops™ program. Upon receiving the tremendous positive feedback from these initial students, Hayakawa-san stated that he was inspired to teach many more students–Japanese and international–to pass on the knowledge and legacy of Japanese Arashi shibori. Recently, his son joined Hayakawa-san in his work and efforts.

Over the course of around 40 years, Hayakawa-san has been mentoring 400 or so Indigo Shibori artists collectively called the Shibori Community, in five regions of Japan.

Hayakawa-san was a sculptor of glass, concrete, and aluminum before becoming an Arashi shibori artist and Sukumo indigo dyer. Many of his art sculptures with embedded shibori patterns adorn the Arimatsu Train Station and other public spaces in Arimatsu.
