We are proud to present 12ISS–Textile & Architecture: The Art of Dimensional Transformation!
Dr. Yoshiko I. Wada, textile scholar and founder of WSNF, is delighted to co-chair the 12th International Shibori Symposium with Sean Mooney, Chief Curator and Managing Director of the Rock Foundation. Museum der Kulturen Basel (MKB), a leading anthropological museum in Europe, will host the event. These collaborations reflect a continuum in Yoshiko’s connection with Edmund Carpenter who lived and worked in Basel researching MKB’s Carl Schuster Archive. In 1985, Yoshiko visited this archive herself. The Rock Foundation continues Edmund Carpenter’s work in anthropology and ethnology.
Since 1992, when Yoshiko founded the ISS, she has co-chaired eleven ISS programs.
There is much to celebrate at 12ISS. Join us to celebrate, share in the brainstorms, initiate and create projects, and more! We explore the future and intersections–materials, structures, and more–between textiles and architecture.
- We celebrate the 50th anniversary of, The Dyer’s Art by Jack Larsen, Alfred Bùler (former MKB Director), et al, a seminal publication that awakened public attention to the many resist-dye techniques practiced by the world’s cultures and recognized the historical and cultural significance of resist-dyeing in textile design and art.
- Let’s see what magic and outcomes emerge from the collaborations between WSNF; individuals like you; and leading art, heritage craft, ethnography, and architecture organizations participating: The Rock Foundation, MKB, Homo Faber in Geneva, Swiss Architecture Museum (S AM), Herzog & de Meuron’s Kabinett Foundation.

The 12ISS Insider’s Cultural Study Tour for WSNF Patrons
Every WSNF tour offers immersive, rich, and deep cultural experiences–genuine encounters with the local culture. For the Insider’s Cultural Study Tour we add special venues and personal touches that make the tour just a bit more enchanting, leisurely, and luxurious.
Experience Venice with Yoshiko, her personal Venetian friend and cultural expert, and Matko. They guide you through the Venice International Art Bienniale: In Minor Keys and Homo Faber Biennial: An Island of Light. The Venetian friend shares her favorite culinary spots!
In Venice and in the areas surrounding Basel–Switzerland, France, and Germany–we visit the significant art, design, textile and architectural sites such as Luigi Bevilacqua Tessitura (Venice), Notre-Dame-du-Haut Chapel, Ronshamp (FR) by Le Corbusier, Rudolf Steiner’s Goetheanum, the Vitra Design Museum (DE), and much more.
