Aranya in Arimatsu

A World Shibori Network Foundation and Srishti Trust Collaboration

October 19 – 27, 2025

Help fund a workshop in Arimatsu for differently-abled young Indian artisans to hone their skills and engage in a creative dialogue with shibori masters and international designers. Their journey of discovery opens up the world of the craft they love—from Aranya Natural in the mountains of South India to the traditional shibori town of Arimatsu, Japan.

World Shibori Network Foundation is matching the Srishti Trust’s funds by raising $9,000.

The funds raised will cover the accommodations and meals for two artisans and their support team, expenses for invited textile and fashion designers to share the learning and creative exploration, the shibori masters’ teaching honorariums, expenses for a translator-facilitator, and the rental of a wheelchair.

BACKGROUND

 

Yoshiko, along with international colleagues, has been offering shibori and natural dye guidance and support for the Aranya program since 2000. Let us bring more of these young artisans to Arimatsu for an immersive cultural and creative experience. The impact is significant not only for the future of shibori. “Making is Thinking,” which leads to “Knowing” what we can do to preserve and nurture heritage crafts as well as our environment—this is our mission.

The 2025 project is the second initiative between the World Shibori Network Foundation and Srishti Social Welfare Trust in Munnar, India, aimed at providing young Indian artisans with the valuable experience of meeting and working with artist colleagues and Japanese craftspeople. This exchange supports the preservation of the traditional Japanese art of shibori by disseminating skills and knowledge among younger artisans worldwide.
