A Virtual Workshop via Zoom

Join us, to learn foundational Japanese shibori methods! Shibori artisans have “engineered” shibori-specific tools over multiple generations and use them in their craft. Now, you will have the opportunity to work and practice with them. Murase-san will introduce you to the various tools of the Arimatsu shibori craft, demonstrate their uses, and answer questions.

Shibori artisan tools we will use: Tsukidashi Kanoko pin, Miura hook, and Te-kumo shibori hook. Learn the basics during the first class. Explore and expand on the techniques during the week in-between the two workshop days. Murase-san will share many ingenious designs and also encourage students’ creative interpretations and expression.

Artists Bios:

Hiroshi Murase was born 4th generation into a textile family of shibori stencil pattern-making artisans in the traditional shibori production center of Arimatsu / Narumi. He has been deeply rooted in the art of shibori his whole life and well-versed in a wide range of shibori techniques. An internationally respected artisan and an enterprising designer, he has more than 40 years experience in the textile field. Currently, Murase is the chairman of the acclaimed Suzusan corporation. Having assumed the reins of the family business in 1971, Hiroshi Murase is widely credited for the “Suzusan innovation” due to his passion and experience.

Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada has co-authored, Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing, and is also author of Memory on Cloth: Shibori Now.
