Clay resist is made of a benign and natural material and is an expressive patterning process which allows an artist to create energetic patterning through layers of monoprinting, stenciling, hand painting, and stamping. Once the clay resist is applied to the cloth and dried, the cloth is then dipped in the indigo vat. Additional clay resist can be applied and dried, and the cloth dipped a second time in the indigo vat. This sequence can be repeated multiple times resulting in subtle or bold imagery with light to dark blue color. Unlike most other mechanical resist substances such as wax, the clay resist is easy to remove.
