Hiroshi Murase, World Shibori Network Foundation’s master shibori artisan, will be traveling to Berkeley this July to enjoy a respite from Arimatsu, Japan’s hot, humid summers and to meet and work with some of his students outside of Japan. Lucky for us! You will have the great privilege and opportunity to meet Murase-san in person and to participate in a series of his LIVE, hands-on July workshops in comfortably cool Berkeley, CA. 

This combination shibori techniques workshop is only open to shibori alumni who have previously studied with Murase-san and are interested in developing their own creative designs and skills. Having studied and practiced using SFTV recordings of Murase-san’s workshops counts. Tesuji involves hand-pleating, and the Arimatsu artisans have been ingenious in innovating a variety of ways to create dynamic designs on cotton yukata and kimono using Tesuji and its variations. Other shibori binding and stitching techniques such as Nui and Makiage incorporated with Tesuji lead to a myriad of design possibilities. Join Murase-san and other shibori artists in this workshop to learn and experiment!

Make a “shibori trip” to Berkeley by combining this workshop with Murase-san’s Shibori Tools Workshop and several other World Shibori Network Foundation events: our annual Garden Event and Ana Lisa Hedstrom’s Arashi Shibori Workshop. We will have lunch in the studio garden each day with Murase-san.Artist Bio: Hiroshi Murase was born 4th generation into a textile family of shibori-stencil pattern making artisans in the traditional shibori production center of Arimatsu / Narumi. He has been deeply rooted in the art of shibori his whole life and well-versed in a wide range of shibori techniques. An internationally respected artisan and an enterprising designer, he has more than 40 years experience in the textile field. Currently, Murase is the chairman of the acclaimed Suzusan corporation. Having assumed the reins of the family business in 1971, Hiroshi Murase is widely credited for the “Suzusan innovation” due to his passion and experience.
