Join this opportunity for the public to sample the teaching and learning that goes on in a workshop by Elin Noble. Then we move outside to the garden for a lovely summer evening in Berkeley, camaraderie, and a picnic dinner–BYO dinner. We cap the evening with a lecture and discussion presented by Elin Noble and Lasse Antonsen.

The Apple Tree on the Abandoned Railroad Line: A Collaboration
While in Assens, Denmark, as artists-in-residence, the artist couple, Elin Noble and Lasse Antonsen, discovered an abandoned railroad line. A walk on the tracks led them to a wild apple tree. Elin found its fruit to be astringent, which for her indicated tannins. She knew the leaves contained flavonoids, a yellow dye. They harvested apples, leaves, and twigs from the tree, and Elin, aided by Lasse, began to dye over 350 yards of cloth yielding a large variety of yellow and golden colors. With iron or titanium post treatments, she expanded the palette from the apple tree to include greys, black, oranges, greens, and browns.

Once back in the U.S., the couple began composing artwork with the dyed cloth. Their creative path was open with experiments and discussions of color, patterns, design solutions, leading from one work to another. In the end, the couple composed over 38 artworks.

The lecture will share their journey from apple tree harvest, to dye experimentation, to their collaborative artistic efforts. Lasse and Elin see their work as an ongoing search for beauty and an homage to the colors and light found in nature.
