Delight in the autumn colors and shibori shapes brilliantly animating the internationally acclaimed designs by Suzusan based in Dusseldorf, Germany and Arimatsu, Japan.

Meet Hiroyuki Murase, Creative Director and chief designer of Suzusan. Hiroyuki masterminded the fusion of shibori heritage craft with contemporary designs in fashion, home, and living. The Murase family in Arimatsu, Japan have been masters and innovators of the shibori craft for five generations.

Meet Yoshiko I. Wada, a formidable textile scholar and the author of two definitive publications on shibori. Yoshiko, along with Jack Lenor Larsen’s seminal publication, established the “Dyer’s Art” in the West.

Relish an opportunity to exchange ideas and share inspiration with these two influencers of fashion design and textile scholarship. It’s also no small matter to acquire Suzusan’s exquisitely designed and crafted products– their no-seam cashmere knits and other fine textiles hand-dyed in Japan.

Suzusan Afternoon POP-UP SHOW Open to the PUBLIC 12:00 – 17:00

Hiroyuki Murase, the creative director of Suzusan, is the eldest son of the Murase family. He studied art at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey, as well as at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. In 2008, he founded the Suzusan label in Düsseldorf with the intention of placing Japanese handicraft in a contemporary context. He created upscale fashion collections to be produced by his family in Japan. This initiative helped to revive the shibori handicraft, which had experienced a decade-long downturn. Today, young people once more work in the artisanal studios of Arimatsu to enhance exclusive clothing with individual modern designs. Suzusan offers its label to a curated clientele from Europe, the US, Australia, and Asia. The studio’s collaborators include Christian Dior Haute Couture, Lacoste, Shinji Ohmaki, Yohji Yamamoto, and Ziggy Chen.

Yoshiko Wada, world-renowned textile scholar, curator, and artist founded WSNF in 1994. When her mentor, Jack Lenor Larsen, suggested she research and write a book detailing Japanese shibori, she co-authored, Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing. She is currently a Fulbright Scholar working on her doctoral thesis. World Shibori Network Foundation (WSNF) is a non-profit organization working to preserve and revitalize Japanese shibori and other heritage textile and craft practices across the globe through education and community engagement.

Tavern on the Green is an iconic, landmark restaurant nestled in a bucolic Central Park setting. Centered around a hearty, rustic menu shaped by local, seasonal ingredients, Tavern on the Green invites patrons into a warm, celebratory gathering space that captures the spirit of Central Park and the energy of New York City. Originally designed by Calvert Vaux and built in 1870 to house the sheep that grazed in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow, Tavern on the Green has proudly served locals, presidents, royalty, artists, actors, and first-time visitors since 1934. David Salama, co-proprietor, is a Trustee of the WSNF Board.
