Location: Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville, CA
Tickets: Priority goes to WSNF Members. Only 12 tickets are available.
$150 Includes demonstrations, talks, tastings, and shopping opportunities.
A tasty lunch at Vik’s Chaat is also included.

Craftsmanship and artistry—working with one’s hands—take many forms. On this one-day excursion through the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, we explore the artistry of chocolatier Karen Urbanek of Flying Noir Art & Chocolate, named one of America’s Top 10 chocolatiers. We then visit Co-Ro, a collaborative small-batch coffee roastery, to discover the craft behind roasting. Finally, we stop at the studio of internationally recognized modern shibori textile designer Ana Lisa Hedstrom for a talk (this talk is open to the public for free).

At each stop, there will be opportunities to taste, touch, shop, and immerse yourself in the craft.

Excursion Itinerary
10:45 AM  Meet at CoRo Coffee Room. Berkeley.
11:00 AM – 12:15 PM  CoRo Collaborative Coffee Roasting Facility Tour and Coffee Talk by Tim Hansen. Coffee shopping.
12:30 – 1:30 PM  Lunch at Vik’s Chaat. Berkeley.
2:00 – 3:30 PM  Flying Noir Kitchen: Chocolate truffle making demo and tasting by Karen Urbanek. Chocolate shopping. Oakland.
4:00 – 5:30 PM Ana Lisa Hedstrom’s Studio: Talk by Ana Lisa. Textile shopping. Emeryville.

OUR PRESENTERS

Ana Lisa Hedstorm is known for her signature textiles based on contemporary adaptations of Shibori. Her approach creates a conversation between East and West and traditional and contemporary. Though Ana Lisa’s work is deeply informed by traditional techniques, she often experiments with material, dye color, and stitching patterns. Her textiles are included in the collections of major museums, including the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Oakland Museum, and the De Young Museum. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally. She has taught and lectured at numerous international Shibori conferences and schools. Her awards include two NEA grants, and she is a fellow of the American Craft Council. Recently, Ana Lisa was invited to join the Homo Faber Artisan Collective.

Karen Urbanek, Chocolatier and Artist, of Flying Noir Art & Chocolate, is named 1 of top 10 chocolatiers in America by Dessert Professional, is a Six-star award winner and Grand Master Chocolatier. Karen makes the finest chocolate possible with an edible palette of the freshest and most intriguing ingredients – local, natural, and sustainable!

Tim Hansen, a very active member of the Berkeley community at large, is a long-time coffee enthusiast.  He learned to roast in 2012 and co-founded Bay Area CoRoasters or CoRo Coffee, a collaborative coffee roasting facility that supports a community of roasting professionals, artisans, and enthusiasts by providing education, technical knowledge, and equipment.
