Celebrating the visual languages of PEOPLE, COMMUNITY, CULTURE, and ENVIRONMENT through the global practice of resist-dye traditions and innovations, keeping in mind authenticity, reciprocity, and networking.
Carol Anne Grotrian has combined quilting and shibori traditions for over 25 years. The organic patterns of shibori helped her find her voice in landscape quilts, which are usually portraits of specific places and times based on sketches on location. Since 1989, landscape has provided abundant inspiration, prodding her to expand her shibori vocabulary. Carol Anne’s designs are an abstract balance of shape, color and shibori patterns, which is overlaid with line—the quilted stitches. Indigo dyeing also appears in her work, for both artistic merit and her own well-being. Her calm handling of indigo prolongs the vat’s life, while it centers her in an almost meditative way. She’s grateful that the struggle to make art decisions is balanced by the physical labor of fabric dyeing and the calm of stitching.
Carol Anne’s sense of place emerged in the northeastern part of the U.S., where she’s lived since 1979. For decades, she has taught shibori, and quilting–locally in New England and as far away as Taiwan.
