The Australia / New Zealand chapter of WSN was first conceived in 1999 during a WSN event in Harrogate, England. Joan James was appointed to the important role of networking with fellow fiber artists and promoting shibori to the Australian people. In 2004, the Australian network was officially established with the coordination of the 5th International Shibori Symposium in Melbourne at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Since its establishment, WSN-Au/ NZ has coordinated exhibitions in Australia and beyond in conjunction with various WSN events. At the ISS’08 in France, the exhibition “Australia Naturally” opened in Paris before touring the eastern states of Australia and the Northern Territory. “SCARF” (2010) toured numerous cities in Australia and New Zealand, including at the World of Wearables and Car Museum in Nelson where the WOW competition is held each year. “Out of the Box – Shibori DownUnder” (2011) opened in October at Sydney’s Barometer Gallery; selected works then traveled to Hong Kong to great reception at the 8th ISS’11. These works are now in the permanent collection of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, gifted as thanks for their incredible support.

WSN- Au / NZ has over 70 members. Joan James is Secretary General.
