Textile Workshops w Yoshiko & Michel

Natural Dyeing en Provençal ·  Silk + Rice Paste Resist ·  Gentle on  Environment

ABOUT. Michel Garcia is from Lauris, France, and is the founder of Couleur Garance & Botanical Garden of Dye Plants. Read Barbara Shapiro’s glowing review of his workshop at the symposium ISS’08 in Paris here: Fiber Arts (Ap ’09). Yoshiko is an expert on Japanese resist-dye techniques including shibori and has authored two definitive books on the subject. She is also President of the WSN. Read more about her here.


Week One (5-day) “Silk & Natural Dyeing”
15-19 June, 2010  –  Tues thru Sat

Explore thoroughly the secret of silk fiber and the way in which a wide variety of effects and colors can be achieved with natural dyes. Yoshiko will cover selective removal of sericin from silk fabric using itajime and arashi methods; effective combinations of different types of fibers and fabrics, from organza to Gunma silk to wool to polyester; and application of kaiki shibu (persimmon tannin). Michel will cover varying mordants and effective natural dye application methods. All methods are gentle to humans and environment. Class taught in English.

Week Two (5-day)
“Natural Dye Block Printing Provencal + Rice Paste Resist Printing Japonaise”

22-26 June 2010 – Tues thru Sat

Michel will introduce a traditional block printing process practiced in Provence for multicolor cotton prints including natural indigo blue. Yoshiko will cover katazome process; how to design and cut shibugami (persimmon tannin stencil paper); how to make rice paste resist that washes away in plain water; how to combine with natural dyeing on fabric and washi (handmade paper). All methods are gentle to humans and environment. Class taught in English.

** Notes about Accommodation

TRAVELING WITH A PARTNER: Due to limited room availability, MdZ is reserved for workshop students only. For those students who will be traveling with a companion and wish to room together, a special arrangement has been made with the equally charming & nicely appointed Masseria Cesarina (5 minutes by car, 10min bicycle, 15min walk from della Zingara). Student & Partner will be accommodated at this beautifully renovated former farmhouse. Student’s lodging is included in the workshop package fee. Spouse/partner’s lodging is NOT included and will be subject to nightly rates at Cesarina (rates adjusted to be equivalent to MdZ). See below for details.

EXTRA NIGHTS accommodation preceding or following the WORKSHOP COURSE(S) can be arranged at Masseria Cesarina. See below for details.

Masseria Cesarina: Eight en-suite bedrooms with bidets & spacious showers. This former farmhouse has been immaculately renovated and tastefully furnished retaining the character of the building. This B&B is very comfortable and features a very nice pool. DAILY RATE, w breakfast: €40 / per person (shared room, twins) or €50 (single room).

Leo Party! Saturday 19. Mid-day Leo celebration in honor of our Leo textile friends. Now an annual tradition, this event was first started by Marian Clayden with fellow Leos Yoshiko & Ana Lisa Hedstrom. It now embraces many more Leos including Jack Larsen, Virginia Davis, Janet Lipkin, and on. We’re taking the party to a global level and bringing it to the beautiful Masseria della Zingara to celebrate with our European textile family. Relax by the pool all afternoon with friends, traditional Pugliese food, regional wine, musical entertainment. All are welcome (workshop & non-workshop). Price: 25

Leo Farewell Lunch. Some of our Leos & friends are coming just for the weekend celebration in Puglia. Join them for a farewell luncheon at a local restaurant. This is not a priced event; guests will pay their own way at the restaurant. But reservations must be arranged so please indicate your interest on the Sign-Up form so we may estimate headcount. Price: n/a
